The next afternoon, they set out on their familiar course through the snow, without reindeer to pull the sleigh, only themselves. In one of its interim blizzards, the winter—when the trees were slowly falling (we didn’t have time to recount it)—also took Marigo’s little boy, a mere gulp for the winter. The following month, it took Christoforos’s eight-year-old grandson—and before long his daughter-in-law, the child’s mother. That’s how people went then (just like today) . . . An unusual dirge was heard as the company beneath the snow grew bigger: “The wolf a hundred years old, and the wolf cubs a hundred and ten, oh-oh-oh, and the wolf cubs a hundred and ten . . .” It was red water that flowed from the earthenware jar in the house when they emptied it in the spring . . . It was no winter’s tale, no it wasn’t, no: out of desperate (though pointless) remorse for her act, the mother of the eight-year-old had plunged her slashed wrists into it.
